“In a Manner of Speaking” (written by Winston Tong)

Originally recorded by Tuxedomoon, “In a Manner of Speaking” is easily one of my favorites. In 1989 Depeche Mode’s Martin L Gore covered it on his first solo recording, Counterfeit e.p. And in 2004, Nouvelle Vague gave us their version on their self-titled debut album.

The raw emotion found in Tong’s voice (on the original recording by Tuxedomoon) never fails to give me a goose bump or two, and Gore definitely does the song justice in his own gloomy way, but I’m probably most impressed with Nouvelle Vague’s version.
