The guys in The Who, like the rest of my favorites, musically peaked about the same time their substance abuse issues peaked. Throughout the 1970’s, bassist John Entwistle paved the way for lead-bassists everywhere, and he managed to do it it in the constant the haze of a fine brandy and a few lines. Although he lived long enough to be eligible for Social Security, he died in 2002 of a young person’s disease: cardiac arrest exacerbated by cocaine. Peccadillos aside, Entwistle’s Rock & Roll legacy remains undeniable; his dizzying technique and his crushing volume influenced musicians for decades.

Somehow, someone posted an odd soundboard mix of the bass track from “Won’t Get Fooled Again” on YouTube. This vid, although live, is nothing but Entwistle. The second clip shows the same song, same concert, but includes the rest of band in the mix.

First, John Entwistle. Lots of silence and darkness during the solos, so be patient.

I’m always amazed at how the guy remained composed in the in the middle of The Who’s chaos.
