I'm with you most of the way! I'm not so sure about the New Pornographers - pales in comparison to Mass Romantic and Twin Cinema, but it wasn't awful. I'm in the midst of my Top 10 - from which I recently linked to you. Check my site out and if you like we can exchange Blogroll links.

There was also The Argument by Fugazi, Girls Can Tell by Spoon, Gorillaz and BRMC's debuts, and Beta Band Hot Shots II. Also Vespertine is the best album Bjork has ever done and the only one I still own/listen to by her.

Alot of Canadians on this list, really cool (that would be New Pornographers, Tegan & Sara, Arcade Fire).

Village Voice 2001 Top Ten (for Keith):

1. Love and Theft - Bob Dylan
2. Is This It - The Strokes
3. Vespertine - Bjork
4. White Blood Cells - White Stripes
5. Amnesiac - Radiohead
6. Gold - Ryan Adams
7. The Blueprint - Jay-Z
8. Party Music - The Coup
9. Essence - Lucinda Williams
10. Poses - Rufus Wainwright

I actually think that this year's crop of records compares rather favorably to 2001. The Dylan, Strokes, Adams and White Stripes albums would be among my favorites of the past decade but not the rest. I think there are at least four albums this year that are just as strong with In Rainbows, Cassadaga, Neon Bible and Under the Blacklight.

The Hold Steady would've also made my list easily if it had come out this year, and like you I was thinking that it had when I wrote mine because it came out so late in 2006 and I listened to it repeatedly well into 2007. Other than that, your list has a lot of my favorite bands on it whose albums this year disappointed me (Springsteen, Interpol, New Pornographers, BRMC), some others who I liked in years past but gave up on (Radiohead, Ryan Adams), and a lot of stuff that just isn't my thing (Rilo Kiley, Jesse Malin, Bright Eyes, Tegan & Sara). I also don't see much difference in the "who's going to care about this in ten years?" angle aside from Radiohead, Springsteen, and the Arcade Fire. I've been looking back at previous year's best of lists, and really, this year just wasn't that great, relatively, in music. Also, holy shit 2001 was a good year.

Thanks for reminding me about Dylanesque and that Albert Hammond Jr. record, though.

Yeah, you're right about the HS album but it came out pretty late in '06 and they toured supporting it throughout this year and it fit my Springsteen theme so I used it. Tell Alyk to dock my pay.

Rilo Kiley is all over mtvU.com. The band is being streamed for their Woodies performance and also for their Dean’s List feature. Here are the links to check everything out: woodies.mtvu.com and http://www.mtvu.com/music/deans_list/
